Malaysian Food Illustrations – Delicious Cendol

by Su May 20, 2020

When I was first starting out on procreate, I decided to practice drawing Malaysian food illustrations. Making the transition from traditional art to digital art is a bit of a learning curve! I’ve had tablets before but always found I couldn’t quite replicate the expressiveness and depth of what I wanted on a computer. So I stuck to traditional art.

But since investing in an iPad, I’ve been using it for all kinds of things like notetaking and study. My main purpose was to create art with it. I do think the apple pencil was such game-changer for me! It’s so responsive.

I started in December of 2019. I practiced a lot. For some reason, I drew a lot of food. Hmmm, I wonder why?

I found this amongst my collection of Malaysian food illustrations.

I was looking through my Procreate folders and found this forgotten wip! I love the bright colours of Malaysian desserts.

It’s a drawing of a delicious Malaysian dessert dish called ‘CENDOL’. Ugh, my mouth is watering just thinking about it. I haven’t finished it yet but I wanted to show a progress picture. This is part of my 100 days project. I’m not great at updating Instagram but decided I would try to post for 100 days. If you would like to keep updated with me (I promise I’ll stick to the challenge) please follow me on my instagram.

My favourite brushes are pencils and paintbrushes. Particularly the 6b pencil and in this image I believe I used the gouache brush! To give a painterly textured effect. I feel that it gives a more expressive feel.

Right now I think this pandemic has made us all a little food crazy, we’re either stress baking or comfort eating. I will add to this and post more food illustrations soon! 🙂

How to Draw A Straight Line in Goodnotes 5

by Su May 13, 2020

I’ve just learnt how to draw a straight line in goodnotes 5 so I thought I’d share how to do this as I could not figure out how to do it!

It’s pretty simple to draw a straight line in goodnotes 5. First of all you need to tap on the SHAPES button. I’ve circled it in the photo below.

Then you can draw where you want the line to appear and the straight line will intuitively snap into a perfect straight line.

I’ve recently got into creating digital planners and stickers. I like how I can easily create bright visual journals and notebooks on the fly! My notetaking app of choice is Goodnotes but I hear there are many others that people like to use.

If you’re a fan of digital note-taking, I have an etsy shop where I create a lot of digital goodies (as well as art prints!) or feel free to read more about this site.
